Writing OU Style
I've been with the OU now for nearly 4 years and have learned
quite a bit about writing (but I'm still a work in
progress!). I've put together bits and pieces that you
might find useful.
Books
The OU puts out two books that are really helpful with
writing and helping you polish up your mathematics skills.
The first book is called The Sciences Good Study Guide
by Andrew Northedge et al. This book is mainly geared
towards the Mathematics, Science and Technology fields.
You can obtain your copy from the OU
directly or via Amazon.
There is another book for the arts that again is mainly for
the humanities but it does have some helpful tips on essay
writing. It is called The Arts Good Study Guide
by Ellie Chambers and Andrew Northedge. You can again
purchase this from the OU
or from Amazon.
Another book that the OU does, which I found useful is
called Good Essay Writing - A Social Sciences Guide by
Peter Redman et al. You can again purchase this from Amazon
but I couldn't find it on the OU site.
I have a small dictionary that I found somewhere in my
travels that has become indispensable to me when writing.
It is called Dictionary of Confusible Words by Adrian
Room. It has definitions of words along with examples of
how to use them. Very helpful at 3 am when writing that
TMA before the deadline! Testimonial from yours truly!
=) I did find it on Amazon
but it seems to be on its way out. But perhaps you can
find something similar in your local book store.
Helpful Documents
During my travels I came across key words that the OU uses
and what they mean. I put them all in one Word document
and you can find it here
zipped up for you.
Here is another document by Geoff Walker (sorry I don't
know exactly where I got this but if you are Geoff Walker - e-mail
me (e-mail address on index
page) and I'll post a link to your site if you like).
I've zipped it up and you can find the Fallacies in Arguments here.
Also here is a file
(it's in .pdf format) that Tina
Ruttkowski posted to First Class on connectives
and verbal sign posting. Since I found it helpful
thought others might too. Thank you to Tina for giving
me permission to post it. =)
Revised: 19 February 2004.
