Favourite Books
I've been debating about whether to put my
favourite books here - even though I don't yet have them
all. Why give you clues on what to collect and make it
harder for me? =) But I thought I'd tell you what I find
irresistible and perhaps you would find something you had
never heard of before. Isn't that what learning is all
about?
All Time Best Reads
My first book has to be Pride & Prejudice
by Jane Austen. The opening line of the book says it all
and if you don't know it well then get reading!
My next recommendation is the Harry Potter
series by JK Rowling. How can one not include this great
story? Even at my age (no cracks there! =P) I loved reading them and seeing
what would happen next. The movie certainly does the
book justice and brings to life the written word - as it ought
to and sadly it doesn't happen often.
New(ish) Cookbooks to Collect
Well there are probably a million books in
this category that I could collect but I do (goodness knows I
don't know how I do it!) limit myself on what I will and won't
buy. I can only recommend that you first check them out
at the library if at all possible before hand, it saves you a
lot of time later on. These are in no particular order
and some might be difficult to find but do try.
Elizabeth David - Her recipes have always
worked (some a bit salty - but you can alter that!) and they
are timeless too! Her 'English Bread and Yeast Cookery'
book - is out of this world!
Rick
Stein - He is passionate about fish and is not into fussy
presentations - my kind of guy!
Rose
Levy-Beranbaum - She is the consummate baker and her books
are worth every penny. You can probably get them on eBay
for a song and they all come in three measurements, cups
(American), pounds & ounces (British), and Mertic (for the
enlightened!).
Ruth Van Waerebeck - I'm not sure how many
books she has written but the one I love is 'Everybody Eats
Well in Belgium'. I first saw it at the library and fell
in love with it. Finally I've broken down and gotten
myself a copy of it but if you too want one you'll have to
look hard. Try Abebooks.com
which is where I finally got mine - as I never saw it on eBay!
Susan
Branch - She's written many and I have all the cookbooks
bar one. I especially love the Christmas one as it is
full of stuff I make year in and year out. Easy and
simple to follow you cannot go wrong with this one!
Marcel Desaulniers - Well if you love
chocolate this author is for you! He is the 'Death by
Chocolate' man and he certainly doesn't scrimp on the
chocolate in any of his recipes! I know - it can cost me
about £15-20 for a cake but man what a cake! I make
them only about once a year but everyone looks forward to
getting a piece of that cake I can assure you!
Sharon Herbst - I think she has written a
number of books but the one I found to be excellent is called
'Breads' (the revised 1994 edition). Although I have her
earlier 1983 one as well - simply because there are a number
of recipes not carried over to the revised edition.
There are plenty of recipes to get you baking and if you
didn't know it by now, I'm the bakerlady!
=)
